Make Time For Your Relationship

By October 23, 2018 October 30th, 2023 5 Comments
Carving out specific time to dedicate to your relationship is crucial to the success of the relationship. If you don’t nurture and tend to your relationship the way that you would nurture and tend to a plant, it simply won’t grow. A relationship needs attention in order to be sustainable. It is so easy to get distracted from our relationships. We have our kids, our careers, our friends and our family. Life becomes a balancing act when we add all of the pieces into the equation. The best way to maintain balance it to remain present. Wherever we are and whatever we are doing, we need to focus our attention on the moment. If we are present, we won’t get distracted by outside influences- it’s that simple.

4 Tips To Make Your Relationship Work

  1. The Couple vs. the Kids. We are always striving to be the best parents in town and somehow our relationships fall by the wayside- people think they can’t be an amazing parent and an amazing spouse- I disagree. It’s about respecting yourself and remembering that you matter too- your relationship matters too.
  2. Put you first. Yes, our kids are the apple of our eye but always remember what we are told on the airplane- we must put our oxygen mask on first before attending to our children. If we don’t attend to our happiness and the happiness of our relationship, no one will be happy- not us, not our relationship and not our kids.
  3. Plan time for your relationship, don’t just squeeze it in. It’s ironic that relationships get pushed to the side- after all, your relationship is the reason why your kids exist today. The importance that you put on your children’s busy schedules- that same importance should be placed on your relationship.
  4. Have date nights regularly. I grew up with parents who had date nights. They modeled mutual respect, love and adoration for one another. It was inspiring and it made me feel good. I always vowed that I would do the same with my relationship. It’s important to get away from the chaos of parenthood and return (for at least the length of the meal) to YOU … to your relationship- it’s important to remember that we know how to relax and have fun together.

No one ever said that balancing parenthood and “Relationshiphood” is easy, but if you could just spend a little more time investing in and focusing on your relationship, the benefits (for ALL) are ever-present and priceless.

Love the article on MAKE TIME FOR YOUR RELATIONSHIPS. It is so hard to balance all my jobs. Wife, Mother, Editor…it seems that I always have too much to do and not enough time for any of these “roles”. I guess it’s all about being mindful of each of these “jobs” so that none of them suffer. Not easy. I appreciate this advice.
